2026 Mid-size Dozer Buyer's Guide

There's more to choosing a dozer than pushing power, with technology, fuel efficiency and operator comfort increasingly influencing buying decisions

Long before excavators begin trenching or road crews lay asphalt, a dozer has often done its work on-site, reshaping the landscape before the next phase of construction can begin. A good dozer quite literally forms the foundation of many construction earthworks projects.

Over the past two decades, dozer design has undergone a shift towards joystick-controlled hydrostatic drives, mastless 3D GPS grade control, and whisper-quiet cabs designed to keep skilled operators in the seat.

While 50-to-100-tonne mega-dozers dominate open-cut mining pits, mid-size crawlers in the 15-to-25-tonne bracket are a mainstay of Australian civil construction, offering a balance of power and manoeuvrability.

The mid-size dozers on offer in Australia are heavy enough to handle hard-packed clay and substantial blade loads, yet compact enough to move between jobsites more easily than their larger counterparts.

In 2026, key trends in this class include improved fuel efficiency, integrated 3D machine control that reduces the need for manual survey staking, and slant-nose bonnet layouts that improve forward visibility down to the cutting edge.

If you’re looking to upgrade your earthmoving fleet, here we take a look at six mid-size crawler dozers available in Australia, in no particular order.

Caterpillar D6

cat d6 dozer

When it comes to shifting dirt, Caterpillar is a familiar name on Australian jobsites, with the mid-size Cat D6 offering a balance of size, power and technology.

Weighing between 22 and 24 tonnes depending on configuration, the D6 is engineered to deliver high blade fill factors while using less diesel than previous generations.

Power is supplied by a Cat C9.3B engine delivering 215hp (161 kW), paired with a fully automatic four-speed transmission that adjusts torque to the ground without requiring operator shifting.

One of the core strengths of the D6 is its integration of standard, simple-to-use factory technology. Systems like Cat Grade 3D integrate receivers directly into the cab roof to eliminate GPS masts and cables on the blade, while Slope Assist automatically maintains pre-set blade angles to help less experienced operators achieve smooth grades faster.

For operators spending long shifts in the seat, the redesigned cab features a 10-inch touchscreen display, viscous cab mounts to suppress vibration, and an updated HVAC system designed to handle scorching Australian summer conditions.

Komatsu has spent decades refining its crawler dozer lineup for local civil and quarrying operations, and the 24-tonne D71-24 stands out as a flagship contender in the mid-size space.

Powered by a Komatsu SAA6D114E-6 engine making 240hp (179 kW), the D71-24 balances brute pushing force with sophisticated electronic engine management.

Driveline performance is driven by Komatsu’s smooth Hydrostatic Transmission (HST), which allows for quick, fully automatic speed adjustments and dynamic counter-rotation steering under full load.

A feature that sets the D71-24 apart is its super-slant nose configuration, achieved by mounting the radiator package at the rear of the machine. This gives operators a clearer view down to the cutting edge, improving visibility when grading.

The D71-24 can be ordered with factory-integrated intelligent Machine Control 2.0 (iMC 2.0). This system allows the dozer to undertake heavy pushing and finish grading in automatic mode, using proactive feature control to measure ground terrain and adjust blade load to help prevent track slip.

Quick Specs:

Horsepower range: 240 hp (179 kW)
Transmission: Dual-path Hydrostatic Transmission (HST)
Configurations: EX (Standard), PX (Low Ground Pressure), or PX Wide
Ideal for: High-visibility dozing, mass site cuts, and 3D automated finishing

John Deere 750L

You’re probably more used to seeing John Deere on a farm than a jobsite, but the brand also offers L-Series crawler dozers for civil construction and land clearing.

Sitting squarely in the 17-to-18-tonne operating class, the John Deere 750L delivers 175hp (131 kW) at 1,700 rpm from a 6.8-litre John Deere diesel engine, mated to a dual-path hydrostatic drive system.

The latest L-Series architecture focuses heavily on increased pushing muscle and enhanced material retention, offering a notable horsepower boost over older generations without increasing hourly diesel consumption.

Another smart engineering feature is a redesigned mainframe that optimises hose and harness layouts to eliminate rub points, paired with large swing-out service doors that streamline daily fluid checks.

Inside the cab, operators benefit from a quiet environment with 16 per cent more glass area for better situational awareness. For contractors chasing automated grading performance, the 750L can also be ordered with factory-integrated SmartGrade technology, combining 3D mastless grade control with remote display access for offsite troubleshooting.

Quick Specs:

Horsepower range: 175 hp (131 kW)
