The popularity of excavators is still at an all-time high, according to data from constructionsales.com.au.
At the end of each year we extrapolate visitation rates on the website, and once again excavators have dominated the construction landscape, well ahead of loaders and dozers.
In this burgeoning category, which brands get the most views? Let’s find out.
Kubota is smashing it out of the park, with the 1.7-tonne U17-3 and 5-tonne U55-4 siblings way out in front – the same two leading the way from 2021, but this time in reverse. The U17-3 had over 34,000 views, with the U55-4 just over 32,000.
Unlike last year, though, Kubota didn’t have four of the top five models, with Yanmar the 'fly in the ointment'.
Yanmar, which like Kubota started out as an engine manufacturer, holds onto second spot overall, with the ViO17 the third most viewed excavator – leaping up two spots from 2021.
The ViO17 is a 1.8-tonne excavator with a ROPS/FOPS canopy and a Yanmar engine producing 13.5hp.
The ViO17 was followed by the ViO80, which is an 8-tonne excavator with a fully enclosed cab.
The award for the biggest inroads in 2022 goes to Komatsu, which has leapfrogged into third position after being outside the top five in 2021.
There are three models inside the top 20, with the track-mounted PC138US-8 and PC18MR-3 leading the way with enough viewings to get the marque into the top three.
If it’s Japanese juggernauts you’re after, you’ve come to the right forum! The 92-year-old company Kobelco is yet another, making excavators of all sizes as well as cranes.
The company’s hero excavator in 2022 is the heavy-duty 13-tonne SK135SR-3 – the only model in the top 10 that doesn’t belong in the compact excavator category.
Bobcat snaps the Japanese domination, with the American company making its way into the top five thanks to its E20 and E50 mini excavators, rated and 2- and 5-tonne respectively.
The E20 was the eighth most popular model with over 12,000 views.
