Cat 973 rounds out track loader range

New 275hp model currently the largest track loader in the industry, Caterpillar claims

With an operating weight of 29,892 kg and a power output of 275hp, Caterpillar’s latest addition, the 973, completes its track loader range and replaces the existing 973K model.

It joins the 953 with 160 hp and 963 with 202hp in the Cat track loader line.

According to Caterpillar, the 973 offers up to 10 per cent better fuel efficiency, more productivity, cab improvements and optional Payload technology over its predecessor.

Powerful track loader

Powered by a Cat C9.3B engine, the Cat 973 features an Auto Mode that will adapt the engine speed to the load, helping reduce fuel consumption by up to 10 per cent, Caterpillar said. Eco Mode will use even lower speed for further reduction in fuel consumption in lighter duty applications. Power Mode will keep engine speed high for heavier duty applications.

An optional Performance Series bucket claims to boost productivity by up to 20 percent while a Fusion Quick Coupler, also available as an option, enables fast attachment changes. A variety of buckets, forks and other tools can be shared among track loaders, wheel loaders and other Fusion compatible machines.

In the cab

An updated cab features a suspension seat, adjustable armrests/controls and an intuitive 10-inch (254mm) touchscreen dash display that features a standard High-Definition rearview camera. Slope Indicate helps make operation easier by showing machine mainfall and cross slope right on the display.

Operators can choose between joystick or V-lever and pedal steering for transmission controls and either joystick or 2-lever implement controls. The joystick option provides familiar controls for operators experienced with skid steers or compact track loaders.

With either control scheme, operators can set implement response – fine, normal, coarse – to match operator preference or application. Repetitive lift, lower, rack, dump and float functions can be preset to make jobs like truck loading easier.

Cat Payload technology delivers precise bucket load information with on-the-go weighing, which helps prevent over- or under-loading.

Product Link collects data automatically from equipment assets – any type and any brand – which can be viewed online through web and mobile applications.
VisionLink allows operators to access information from wherever they are in the world. A Cat dealer can help con?gure a customised subscription, available with cellular or satellite reporting or both.
Remote Troubleshoot allows Cat dealers to perform diagnostic testing remotely, reducing downtime and cost.
Remote Flash updates on-board software without a technician being present, at a convenient time, potentially reducing update time by as much as 50 per cent, Caterpillar said.
Application Profile and Operator ID saves preferred machine settings according to individual operator needs and tasks, allowing them to get straight to work without fumbling with controls each time.
Passcode provides an optional additional level of security by requiring an operator to enter an ID before the machine will start.

The Cat 973 can be specified in a number of configurations, including purpose-built Low Ground Pressure (LGP), Waste Handling/Demolition and Ship Hold that all come factory equipped with specialised undercarriage, guarding and other features to take on the toughest tasks.

The 973 Steel Mill package includes a specialised cab, insulated steel fuel tank, high temperature undercarriage and insulation throughout the machine, making it suitable for handling slag.
