Caterpillar’s new D4 dozer, formerly known as the D6K2, has received a number of refinements to offer a more productive and cost-effective operation, the company said.
It comes in two configurations – a standard version as well as a LGP (low ground pressure) model. The D4 weighs 13,272 kg, with a net power of 130hp, while the D4 LGP has an operating weight of 14,008kg.
A big design change on the new D4 is a lower sloping hood line that Cat said provides up to 30 per cent better visibility to the area in front of the blade compared to its predecessor model. Shorter sight lines mean operators don’t have to back up so often to get a full view of the material and in turn get the job done faster.
In the cab, operators will find a more comfortable seat with improved suspension and multiple adjustments for personalised comfort, Cat added. A 10-inch touchscreen in the cab displays all key machine settings and features, as well as the view from a standard High Definition rearview camera.
The D4 includes several standard technology features aimed at helping operators work more efficiently, regardless of experience level. They are:
An optional technology package includes the standard technology features plus:
Antennas and receivers are housed in a low-profile roof-mounted spoiler. AutoCarry is packaged with Grade with 3D, automating blade lift to help get more consistent blade loads with each pass and reduce track slip.
Customers can choose to install other 3D grade systems from Trimble, Topcon and Leica in the D4 to integrate the machine easily into jobsites with existing grading technology infrastructures. All Cat Grade systems are compatible with Trimble, Topcon and Leica radios and base stations.
Engine oil and engine oil filter service intervals on the D4 have been extended to 1000 hours, while service intervals on the air cleaner and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) pump filter have also been extended. LED lights replace halogen ones to provide up to six times longer life and hence reduced parts cost.
Cat said longer service intervals lower maintenance costs by up to seven per cent.
The D4 comes with a range of connectivity functions that allow fleet owners to monitor machine performance and troubleshoot issues with ease. Some features include:
A Variable Pitch Angle Tilt (VPAT) blade comes standard on the D4 dozer in both configurations. Customers can opt for a foldable VPAT blade to reduce transport width if they wish.
The D4 can be specced with specialised guarding and an impact-resistant cab with polycarbonate windows to take on harsher applications such as forestry or land clearing.
