Cat launches M series wheel loaders

Features drivetrain, hydraulic and cab enhancements for improved performance and fuel efficiency

Caterpillar claims its new M series wheel loaders offer up to 22 per cent more power while using significantly less fuel compared to its predecessor models.

The medium wheel loader series features four models – 950M, 962M, 966M and 972M – that meet US EPA Tier 3/EU Stage IIIA equivalent engine emission standards.

The 950M and 962M are powered by a Cat C7.1 ACERT engine, while the 966M and 972M feature the Cat C9.3 ACERT engine. Net power ratings range from 252 to 298hp and approximate operating weights range from 19,000kg to 25,000kg.

According to Cat, the refined engines increase engine power by 22 per cent in the 950M, eight per cent in the 962M, 10 per cent in the 966M and five per cent in the 972M (compared to Cat's H series wheel loaders).

The 950M and 962M use a 5F/3R countershaft power-shift transmission, while the 966M and 972M feature a 4F/4R planetary power-shift transmission.

A high-capacity torque converter in all M series models uses a lock-up clutch for high-speed performance. Caterpillar's Advanced Productivity Electronically Controlled (APEC) control system maintains torque flow during range shifts for faster acceleration on ramps and smoother shifts in the transmission's direct-drive mode.

The redesigned axles feature on-the-go disc-type differential locks to improve tractive ability.

Cat says the disc-type differential locks will reduce tire scuffing compared to other traction aids, further reducing operating costs.

The 950M and 962M feature a unique Z-Bar linkage that provides optimised bucket performance, increased visibility and parallel lift capabilities.

Cat's Fusion Coupler System uses a unique wedging mechanism for fast tool changes on the M series machines.

With engine-idle management and shutdown systems, the 966M and 972M use up to 15 per cent less fuel compared to their H series predecessors; while the 950M and 962M use 10 per cent less fuel, says Cat.

A load-sensing hydraulic system features proportional flow for fast and smooth hydraulic response. It has been designed to deliver more engine power to the wheels at partial hydraulic flow, allowing faster cycle times in load-and-carry and ramp operations.

All models are equipped with a four-post Roll Over Protection System (ROPS) cab with seat-mounted, electro-hydraulic implement controls.

The control panel has been streamlined with easy-to-reach controls for operator efficiency, while standard heating and air-conditioning systems provide comfort in any climate.

Stair-steps, a large entry door and grab bars provide safe access to machine platforms. Floor-to-ceiling glass in the windshield, large mirrors with spot mirrors, and a rear-vision camera provide all-round visibility.

A new ride-control system with dual accumulators allows faster cycles, improved material retention, and a smooth ride for the operator, Cat adds.

The front and rear frames of the new M Series models are fabricated from robotically welded high-strength material, designed to dissipate forces associated with aggressive loading and digging.

Cat's one-piece tilting hood with side and rear doors provides easy access to daily fluid level checks and fuelling points. The new external caliper disc parking brakes are also easily accessible for inspection and service.

Cat has installed a number of technologies in its M series wheel loaders for easier management of the machines. Its Product Link system helps fleet owners track critical items, including location, hours, fuel usage, diagnostic codes, and idle time.

The Production Measurement system, on the other hand, accurately weighs materials being loaded and hauled to improve productivity, reduce overloading, and track material movement.
