Caterpillar’s new 980 GC medium wheel loader has been designed with ease of operation and lower operating costs in mind.
Powered by a Cat C13 engine paired with Caterpillar’s Clean Emissions Module, the model integrates a suite of fuel-saving technologies, including an on-demand cooling fan, load-sensing hydraulics, variable speed fan, and an Engine Idle Management System (EIMS) designed to reduce unnecessary fuel burn during idle.
A four-speed automatic planetary transmission with Electronic Clutch Pressure Control (ECPC) provides travel speeds of up to 39.8km/h, smoother gear shifts and improved reliability, while optional ride control enhances stability and material retention on rough ground.
Customers can also specify limited-slip differential axles for improved traction in challenging underfoot conditions.
The 980 GC offers a bucket capacity of 4.3 to 5.8 cubic metres, with multiple bucket configurations available including general purpose, flat floor, heavy-duty rock, coal, and light material. Caterpillar’s Performance Series bucket design is intended to improve material retention and reduce dig times.
The model features Caterpillar’s proven Z-bar loader linkage with cast crossmember and tilt-lever for stronger digging efficiency and high breakout forces. Load-sensing hydraulics produce flow and pressure for the implement only when needed, resulting in lower fuel consumption.
The Cat Fusion quick coupler and controls is an option on the 980 GC, allowing the use of a wider variety of tools in conjunction with optional third-function hydraulics.
Telematics is standard, with Cat VisionLink enabling fleet managers to track hours, fuel use, idle time, and machine health remotely. Payload options include the Cat Payload on-board weighing system for improved truck loading efficiency, while the Cat Payload for Trade system allows certified scale data to be integrated directly into business operations.
Caterpillar has focused heavily on operator environment, with the 980 GC featuring a larger cab design, intuitive control layout, pilot-operated hydraulics, improved air-conditioning system and a suspension seat with adjustable armrests and headrest.
Visibility improvements include a wide, distortion-free front windscreen, extended windows, rearview mirrors with spot mirrors and a standard rear-view camera.
Dual-side ladders provide easier and safer access to the cab and service points.
Routine servicing has been simplified with grouped grease fittings, a one-piece tilting hood, swing-out radiator and sight gauges for daily checks. Customers can also fit the optional Cat Autolube system, which automates lubrication and alerts operators to any faults.
Like other Cat machines, the 980 GC is backed by the company’s dealer network for parts, support and service agreements.
"We’ve built the new 980 GC on a long legacy of high performance and highly reliable wheel loaders with proven components and integrated Cat machine systems”, said Frank Stadelmann, Caterpillar global product application specialist.
“The loader’s simple user interface, intuitive controls and excellent visibility make for comfortable and efficient operation, even with less experienced operators.”
