JCB set to debut hydrogen engine on world stage

JCB’s hydrogen combustion technology will be showcased at the 2023 CONEXPO-CON/AGG expo

JCB has announced it will display its hydrogen combustion technology at the upcoming North American trade show, 2023 CONEXPO-CON/AGG, as part of the International Fluid Power Exposition (IFPE), marking the engine’s debut on the international stage.

JCB has been working on its hydrogen combustion technology and equipment for several years and is finally ready to unveil the innovative tech for the world to see.

In addition to a hydrogen engine, JCB has released a hydrogen-powered backhoe loader and telescopic handler, as well as a mobile hydrogen refueller.

JCB's Lord Bamford with the company's hydrogen combustion technology

“The JCB engineering team has made enormous strides in a short space of time to develop a hydrogen internal combustion engine and it already powers a JCB prototype backhoe loader and a Loadall telescopic handler,” said JCB Chairman, Lord Bamford.

“As the first construction equipment company to develop a fully working combustion engine fuelled by hydrogen, I’m delighted we are now able to present this technology on the international stage.”

This is not JCB’s first venture into the clean energy space, having released a comprehensive range of electric-powered machines several years prior. JCB also claimed to be the first to release the world’s first battery-electric mini excavator, the JCB 19C-1E.

The entire range of E-TECH electric machines, as well as its clean diesel engine technology which the company claims emits half the carbon dioxide compared to machines manufactured in 2010, will be showcased on its stand in Las Vegas.

The 2023 CONEXPO-CON/AGG will be held from March 14 to 18.
