Komatsu unveils its smartest excavator yet

New PC220LCi-12 excavator boasts major upgrades in tech, power, comfort and safety

Komatsu has taken the wraps off what it’s calling its most advanced excavator to date — the PC220LCi-12 — at its first major launch event since 2018. Unveiled at the 'Boots On' event in May, the 20-tonne machine represents a significant step forward in semi-automation and intelligent construction technology.

The excavator marks the first major redesign of this model class in nearly two decades, with improvements across the board — from engine and hydraulics to the cab, work equipment and technology systems.

More power, better fuel efficiency

Under the hood, the PC220LCi-12 is powered by a new Tier 5 engine delivering 172hp (129kW). Komatsu says its redesigned exhaust after-treatment system — which merges SCR and DPF tech while eliminating EGR — will improve reliability and significantly extend service intervals.

“We’ve gone back to a single fixed-geometry turbo which will extend the life of oil and servicing. Intervals are now up to 9000 hours,” said Mark Boyes, Komatsu Australia's National Business Manager – Construction Excavators.

The new electrohydraulic system (EHS) also brings tangible gains, including up to 18 per cent better fuel efficiency and a seven per cent boost in digging forces, thanks to larger work equipment and improved hydraulics.

“This machine features a 15 per cent increase in boom, arm and cylinder size for more breakout force and performance,” Boyes said.

Redesigned cab puts operator first

Inside, the operator cabin has been completely reworked, with a 30 per cent increase in legroom and enhanced ergonomics.

“The cab has had probably the biggest change,” Boyes noted. “More legroom, better adjustability for seats and controls, and new electronic lever controls that can handle a variety of functions — from attachment operation to phone and audio controls.”

A high-definition 8-inch touchscreen panel and multiple storage options round out the more comfortable and user-friendly workspace.

Intelligent Machine Control 3.0 debuts

The PC220LCi-12 is also the first machine to feature Komatsu’s iMC 3.0 — the latest version of its Intelligent Machine Control suite. The update brings improved in-field design capability and semi-automated functionality, such as autograde assist, compaction control and auto-swing for faster truck loading.

“With iMC 3.0, operators can now carry out design tasks like setting stringline alignments or trap drains without needing a preloaded engineering model,” Boyes said.

The PC220LCi-12 also features an advanced payload meter to help optimise loads and prevent overloading. Once connected with the optional Smart Construction Fleet, truck data can be automatically transferred to the excavator and displayed on a new 10-inch iMC 3.0 monitor without any manual input.

“That'll give operators peace of mind when they are loading trucks that they're not only achieving the tonnage they need, but they're also loading it safely to the capacity of the truck,” Boyes explained.

Other technology that comes standard on the PC220LC-12 include integrated 2D machine control for simple depth and slope grading, and 2D virtual safety wall.

Safety tech upgrade

Safety also gets a major lift on the PC220LCi-12. The 3D boundary control feature lets operators set virtual height, depth, and perimeter restrictions, preventing the machine from breaching unsafe zones — such as overhead powerlines or building structures. This not only ensures safety of workers in the machine and on site, but also prevents costly damage to the machine and surrounding infrastructure.

The upgraded KomVision system uses four cameras to provide a 360-degree view around the machine. If an object or person enters the detection zone, the system alerts the operator visually and audibly and can automatically halt both track and hydraulic movements to avoid collisions.

“This is a soft launch — the machine we have here is built to North American spec,” Boyes said. “Our first sales units are expected to land later this year or early next.”
