New JCB five-tonners unveiled

Featuring a number of upgrades, two new midi excavators have been added to JCB's extensive line-up of earthmoving equipment

JCB Construction Equipment Australia (CEA) has expanded its mini excavator offering with the addition of two new excavators in the five tonne category, the 55Z-1 and the 48Z-1.

Despite their low operating weights, the new models share the same design seen on the larger machines in JCB's compact excavator range, with 100 per cent steel bodywork and a sturdy four-plate dipper arm construction.

The dig end is 100 per cent bushed, which extends the greasing intervals to 500 hours. The models have been redesigned with longer main booms and shorter dipper arms which, according to JCB, provide up to five per cent greater dump height for easier truck and site dumper loading.

The machines' hydraulic systems have also been upgraded to deliver nine per cent more bucket tear-out force and higher dipper arm tear-out force, says the company. They also include optional hydraulic or manual quickhitches for faster attachment changeover.

"The design upgrades are all about boosting the machines' performance and productivity," says JCB CEA National Product Manager for Compact Equipment, Phil Withell.

"We're seeing significant fuel savings compared to other brands on the market, especially on tonnes of material moved per litre of fuel consumed."

Both the 55Z-1 and the 48Z-feature an improved cab, which JCB says is 18 per cent more spacious and offers up to 11 per cent more visibility.

"One of our biggest improvements with these midis is the adoption of a new display screen and control system with an automotive-style rotary controller, allowing easy access to a host of systems and information," Withell says.

"The new screen allows operators to customise their preferred information.

"The operator can set auxiliary hydraulic flows for two separate attachments from the cab, while the menu mode button switches the rotary controller between throttle modes, including a one-touch idle function and menu mode."

The new models are available in zero tail-swing configurations for better manoeuvrability.

"Tracked excavators have been part of the JCB manufacturing family for over 50 years," says Withell.

"Our latest midi excavators are quite simply the strongest and highest performing next generation of machines we've ever built."
