
When most people think of an excavator, they picture a five-tonne mini digger tackling landscaping duties, a 30-tonne machine preparing a stretch of road, or perhaps a larger 50-tonne workhorse digging the foundations for a high-rise.
But step onto the open-cut mines of the Pilbara or Bowen Basin and you'll quickly realise the word excavator takes on a completely different meaning when the goal is moving as much dirt as possible.
In these environments, ultra-class mining shovels rule the roost, shifting thousands of tonnes of material every hour, often operating around the clock as crews work in shifts. Short of a dragline, nothing moves more dirt than an ultra-class excavator.
Weighing between 800 and 1000 tonnes, these behemoths represent the pinnacle of heavy earthmoving. They carry price tags well into eight figures and use buckets exceeding 50 cubic metres, capable of moving up to 90 tonnes of material with every pass.
Let's take a look at the elite class of mega excavators that dominate the surface mining industry—although these aren't machines you're likely to find on a typical construction site.

With an operating weight of 1000 tonnes, the Caterpillar 6090 FS currently holds the crown as the heaviest production excavator in the world.
To keep this literal mountain of steel moving, Caterpillar fits the machine with twin 60-litre Cummins QSK60 two-stage turbocharged diesel engines producing a combined 4500hp.
A major benefit of the twin-engine concept is operational redundancy, allowing the shovel to maintain full digging forces and achieve up to 65 per cent of its production capability even if one engine is down.
The primary engine output drives an ultra-precise hydraulic pump management system that circulates an incredible 13,000 litres of hydraulic oil through eight variable-flow axial piston main pumps, delivering a maximum combined flow rate of 7,488 litres per minute.
It also features a standard face shovel bucket capacity of 52 cubic metres and a rated payload of 93.6 tonnes, enabling the 6090 FS to fill ultra-class haul trucks such as the Cat 797F in just four passes.
The Cat 6090 also has an unmistakable soundtrack, with a deep Cummins rumble accentuated by the jet-like whine of its enormous turbochargers.

The Komatsu PC9000-12 weighs up to 896 tonnes and is available in either front shovel or backhoe configurations, quickly becoming an ultra-class machine of choice on mine sites across Australia.
Beneath the massive cab sit two advanced 16-cylinder Komatsu SSDA16V160E-3 diesel engines producing a combined 4500hp.
For mine sites transitioning towards zero-emissions infrastructure, Komatsu also offers an electric-drive variant powered by two electric motors producing around 2279hp each. The system draws power directly from the grid via a high-voltage cable.
The magic of the PC9000-12 lies in its high-volume open-circuit hydraulic system, where eight swash-plate main pumps feed high-pressure oil through a double-hose routing system designed to reduce energy losses.
This setup generates an immense breakout force of 2395kN and, when equipped with a standard 46-49 cubic metre bucket, can fill an iconic Komatsu 930E dump truck in as little as four passes.


The Liebherr R 9800 represents the pinnacle of high-capacity mining shovel design from the company's specialised factory in Colmar, France, optimised for outstanding fuel efficiency without compromising performance.
Weighing 800 tonnes in backhoe configuration and up to 810 tonnes as a front shovel, the R 9800 is engineered to withstand more than 80,000 operating hours in some of the world's harshest environments.
Buyers can choose between twin Cummins QSK60 engines (also found in the Cat 6090) or dual Liebherr D9812 12-cylinder units, producing up to 4000hp.
What sets this European giant apart is Liebherr's proprietary Power Efficiency system, an intelligent engine management suite that automatically optimises hydraulic flow and engine speed in response to joystick inputs, dramatically reducing fuel consumption.
With a massive 47.5 cubic metre bucket capacity and a maximum breakout force of 1980kN, the R 9800 remains a popular choice for high-output operations demanding long-term reliability, class-leading fuel efficiency and serious payload capacity.


Hitachi's largest excavator, the EX8000-7, combines advanced fuel-saving technology with serious productivity and operator comfort through a cab designed to reduce fatigue.
Tipping the scales at 848 tonnes, the EX8000-7 relies on dual 60-litre Cummins QSKTA60-CE engines producing a combined 3888hp.
Hitachi also offers the EX8000-7E, replacing the diesel engines with twin heavy-duty AC electric motors producing a combined 3218hp.
To withstand the punishing shock loads of heavy digging, the machine features a sophisticated full-box boom and arm design that evenly distributes structural stress across the front attachment.
Hydraulic power comes from 16 variable-displacement axial piston pumps delivering high-pressure oil through an advanced valve management system capable of loading more than 75 tonnes of material with its 43 cubic metre loading shovel bucket.

No list of mega excavators would be complete without acknowledging the legendary Terex RH400, which redefined the limits when it debuted in 1997. Although production ended in 2012, it remains an icon.
Originally developed in Germany by O&K and Terex before later transitioning to Bucyrus ownership, the 1000-tonne powerhouse rewrote the record books and became the blueprint for modern ultra-class excavators.
The RH400 pioneered the modern twin-engine concept for the segment, combining two Cummins QSK60 engines to deliver 4500hp—an extraordinary figure at the time that left competitors behind.
It also proved hydraulic shovel geometry could reliably handle a 50 cubic metre bucket and payloads exceeding 90 tonnes, cycle after cycle.
Although no longer in production, the RH400's structural architecture and hydraulic principles remain the foundation of today's ultra-class earthmoving machines.
