As Victoria enters a harsh Stage 4 lockdown to combat the spread of COVID-19, Premier Daniel Andrews has announced further restrictions on industries and businesses, including construction.
The State Government has acknowledged that construction is the “lifeblood of the economy” and will therefore be allowed to proceed, but with reduced capacity.
The Premier has classed construction work into three categories that determines how many employees are allowed on site.
The first category is the major infrastructure projects that the government is involved in. The workforce on those sites has already been halved before today’s announcement, according to the Premier, but the Government will further assess each project to ensure staff numbers are reduced to the practical minimum.
The second category is larger scale construction work which includes commercial buildings, apartments, factories and the like involving buildings with more than three storeys. In this instance, no more than 25 per cent of the normal workforce is permitted on site.
The third category is residential construction in which a maximum of five workers are allowed on site.
In addition, all sites are required to comply with a COVIDSafe plan focused on safety, prevention and response in the event that coronavirus is linked to the workplace.
The new regulations will come in force from 11:59pm on Friday, August 7, and will be in place for at least six weeks.
Premier Andrews has also announced further financial support for businesses suffering as a result of the lockdown. Businesses in regional Victoria can apply for a $5000 grant while those in Melbourne and Mitchell Shire can apply for up to $10,000.
