Volvo CE adds short-swing crawler to excavator lineup

The 25-tonne ECR255 uses less fuel and has appreciably more lift than its predecessor

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has added a new short-swing model to its latest generation of excavators – the 25-tonne ECR255, which will make its trade show debut in Las Vegas from March 3-7 and is now available for order in the Oceania market.

The ECR2554 joins the large ECR355, mid-size ECR145 and compact ECR90 excavator as short-swing models in Volvo CE's latest excavator series, providing a seven per cent increase in lifting capacity and a 10 per cent reduction in fuel consumption compared to its predecessor.

The operating weight is up to 29,030kg, and engine power is 173hp (129kW) at 1800rpm.

“This launch means Volvo now offers a comprehensive range of short-swing models in our new generation of excavators, giving customers the flexibility to choose the right machine for their application without compromise,” said Jaesu Kim, Chief Project Manager, Volvo CE.

“It’s designed to help customers do more in confined spaces thanks to its reduced tail swing, increased lifting capability, lower fuel consumption and industry-leading operator environment.”

The ECR255 electro-hydraulic control system includes a smart cooling system and engine speed regulation for higher torque at a lower rpm. Features like auto-idling, automatic engine shutdown and customisable work modes also help keep operating costs in check without compromising performance.

The ECR255’s boom and bucket movements can be automated for faster, more accurate digging and grading, and there’s the ability to set boundary limits and boom and swing priority functions.

Service intervals are 1000 hours for engine oil and 3000 hours for hydraulic oil changes, while Volvo’s standard telematics and optional advanced telematics provide real-time machine insights and predictive maintenance support.

Customers can add Volvo smart view with obstacle detection, which gives operators 360-degree visibility of the machine’s surroundings and the ability to distinguish between objects and humans.

The cab can be upgraded with like a larger, higher-resolution Volvo Co-Pilot display and improved heating/cooling performance. There’s also Bluetooth connectivity, wireless phone charging and a heating/cooling compartment.
