Volvo mid-size electric digger surfaces

EX03 electric wheeled excavator prototype was unveiled at the recent China International Import Expo (CIIE) 2020

Continuing on its electromobility journey, Volvo CE has lifted the cover off its 14-tonne EX03 electric excavator concept, which is the company’s first electric model in the mid-size range.

Like its smaller EX02 counterpart released several years ago, it emits low noise and zero exhaust emissions; and offers reduced maintenance, the company said.

Volvo CE said the EX03 is still in its concept stage with no plans to release it to market just yet, but the company is exploring possibilities of trialling a similar version in customer pilots in the near future.

“This prototype is a significant step forward in the evolution of medium electric construction machines,” said Volvo CE program manager for Advanced Engineering, Inwoo Kim, who oversaw the project.

“As our first electric excavator concept in the mid-size range, we have been quick to build and expand on our existing electromobility technology. With the same power and force as a diesel machine of the same size, there has been no compromise on performance.”

The 14-tonne EX03 is equipped with a battery pack from Volvo Trucks and is supported by technology from across the Volvo Group. Volvo CE said it boasts the same performance level as a diesel machine of the same class but with the added benefits of zero emissions, higher efficiency, lower noise levels and reduced total cost of ownership.

A prominent feature on the EX03 is its innovative rear screen feature designed to improve operator safety, Volvo CE said.

The video screen fixed to the rear of the EX03 has three configurations:

• A real-time video stream from the front of the machine allowing vehicles behind to see clearly ahead when driving on public highways

• A text-based safety screen alerting workers on site to left and right movement or reversing; and

• A safety communication live stream enabling the operator to make eye contact with pedestrians and workers for increased safety.
